Unilever and WWF begin discussions looking at how to assure the long-term sustainability of global fish stocks and the integrity of the marine eco-system. |
1997 |
MSC becomes legally ratified. MSC becomes a two year inclusive, global consultation process with stakeholders around the world to establish an environmental standard based on the UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation's (FAO) Code of Conduct for responsible fisheries. This includes eight workshops and two expert drafting sessions resulting in Principles and Criteria for Sustainable Fishing. |
1999 |
MSC becomes a fully independent, non-profit organisation. US office opens in Seattle. |
2000 |
Western Australian Rock Lobster becomes the first fishery in the world to be certified to the MSC Standard. First restaurant in the world carries the MSC logo on its menu. |
2001 |
Full governance structure is completed which encourages a balance of views and representation from all sectors, leading to increased transparency. |
2002 |
100 products across the world carry the MSC label. Asia-Pacific office opens in Sydney, Australia. |
2003 |
There are seven certified fisheries around the world. |
2004 |
The MSC holds its first ever Fundraising Gala in March to raise money for the conservation of the Pacific Ocean. The new Chief Executive, Rupert Howes, assumes his role in October. By the end of 2004, eleven fisheries are certified to the MSC environmental standard. |
2005 |
By the end of 2005, fourteen fisheries are certified to the MSC environmental standard. More than 300 seafood products bearing the MSC’s blue eco-label are available in supermarkets around the world. |
2006 |
Retailers Wal-Mart and ASDA pledge to switch to 100% MSC-certified fish within 3 to 5 years. Fish & Kids, the MSC’s project designed to bring sustainable seafood sourcing to schools and restaurants, wins a Green Award in the category ‘Best Direct Mail Business to Business’. By the end of 2006, 21 fisheries are certified to the MSC standard and over 450 products worldwide carry the blue MSC eco-label. |
